monte cassino

  • 3/4ounce Bénédictine
  • 3/4ounce yellow Chartreuse
  • 3/4ounce freshly-squeezed lemon juice
  • 3/4ounce Rittenhouse 100-proof rye whiskey.

Mix the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon twist.

From the nyt. Also in the same article:

“I wanted to take a complex ingredient like Bénédictine and make a simple drink out of it,” he explained. “No bitters or esoteric infusions or egg whites or any other silliness.”

HMPH! The best drinks contain all three.

Rums we've tried

Neisson White Rum (in a ti' ponch)
Santa Terasa Rum
Barbancourt 8 year (Haiti)
JM Rum (amber agricole, Martinique)

Whiskey Daisy, Jenever Variation

  • 1.5 oz genever
  • 1/4 muddled lemon
  • 0.5 oz pear eau de vie
  • 0.5 oz grand marnier

Whiskey Daisy
From Harry Johnson’s New & Improved Bartender’s Manual (1882)

  • ½ Tablespoonful sugar
  • 2 or 3 dashes Lemon juice
  • 1 dash lime juice
  • 1 dash Seltzer
  • ¾ glass of finely shaved ice
  • 1 wine glass good whiskey
  • ½ pony glass yellow chartreuse
Stir up well with spoon; then take a fancy glass and have it dressed with fruits of the season, and strain the mixture into it, and serve.

Nonino Sour

nonnino sour

2 improved nonino sours and a wine purse.

  • 1 1/2oz Amaro Nonino
  • 1/2oz Sazerac Rye
  • 3/4oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1oz chamomile demerara syrup
  • 1 egg white

Combine all ingredients and dry shake vigorously to emulsify egg white. Add ice and shake again enough to chill properly. Strain into sour glass and garnish by grating fresh orange zest onto surface of drink.

IMPROVEMENTS!
  • 1oz Amaro Nonino
  • 1oz Sazerac Rye
  • 3/4oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1oz chamomile demerara syrup
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 dash angostura bitters
we tried this with a float of angostura bitters first, but the bitters were too strong. putting it in the drink seemed to work better. the amaro was a little too sweet, to having equal parts rye and amaro worked well. this tastes like you can have a pint of it with a straw.
